“ This was my second time here. My first time was takeout during 2020. I came back because I liked the fact that it was a bit different than your typical tex mex. It didn't disappoint. Tortilla chips come as a full tortilla with a red and a green salsa, both of which are fresh and tasty, not like some of the tasteless, watery salsas you get at some restaurants. Quesadilla was good too, a pretty big portion with good taste. ”
“ I went last week for the first time and it was so good! I am a Texas native and this is the best authentic mexican I've had in Birmingham so far! Queso was so good and all the food was so fresh! The ambiance was great too! Looking forward to taking my dad here when he comes to town in the next few days! ”
“ The food was awesome and tasty. Their margaritas were excellent. The atmosphere and staff were great. Highly recommend El Zunzun. ”
“ Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Upscale Mexican that was not really authentic as advertised. It was very good though and I really liked their salsa. Will go back, but if you're looking for authentic Mexican food, try a hole in the wall. ”
“ Great decor. Fun and festive! The chips and salsa were yummy! We had the hummingbird Queso. Loved the large chips. The Queso was a bit cold and thick. We had the chicken fajita. Large amount of grilled chicken. It could have been hotter. The service was excellent. Daniel, our waiter was very attentive checking in and bringing refills. ”
“ First time visiting and won't be the last. They have outside seating; a plus for those nice sunny Birmingham days. Had guacamole and El Zun Zun wings for appetizers. The guacamole is good but those wings were out of this world delicious. They are grilled then fried to perfection. They are served with two sauces, cilantro lime ranch and house chipotle. The house chipotle is my favorite. For my entree I had the beef short rib with mole sauce enchiladas served with green rice and black beans. This dish was delicious. The short was very tender. I was skeptical at first about the green rice but it was delicious as well; way better than your standard Mexican rice. They have a great drink menu. I had a El Zun Zun margarita, it was all that. All in all a great place for great Mexican cuisine. Oh and the service was excellent. ”
“ El Zun Zun and Leaf and Pedal are doing a fun, festive Christmas popup this holiday season. The event is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. I read about it in the Vestavia Voice. This is a small Christmas popup bar under an enclosed tent that offers music, lights, and decorations. It was super fun and will definitely get you in the holiday spirit. I ordered the Mexican hot chocolate, which was absolutely delicious. I also tried their warm apple cidar cocktail that came in a fun Christmas ornament cup. For food, they had apoetizers. We tried the white Christmas dip, which was queso and chips, and the Grinch dip, which was guacamole. There are two sizes, small and large. The small was plenty for my husband and me. ”
“ HAVE A HUMBELIVEABLE DAY! El Zunzun or Hummingbird as it translates to in one of the Caribbean languages, came highly suggested from a Birmingham foodie. She gave informed me that this Restaurant is owned by Becky Satterfield, owner of another local favorite Satterfield's (also located in Cahaba Heights). The inside of the restaurant is very bright and colorful. Festive flags and colorful chairs. Really creates and fun and enjoyable environment. Came here after some shopping with a friend on Saturday. I don't believe they take reservations, but I could be wrong. When we came in they sat us right away. When we were first looking over the menu we were thinking of ordering the hummingbird quesso, but quickly decided against it once our waiter brought over an adorable basket of chips and salsa to the table. We were given two different varieties of salsa one red and one green. My favorite was the traditional red salsa, the green one was just blah in my opinion. I wanted to get a margarita, though I was a little mad that the margaritas were $10 I said screw it and got one anyway. The watermelon one was my personal preference for the evening and I let Jasmine take a few sips. It was flavorful and very good. I did wish there was a bit more watermelon flavor in it though instead of it being super heavy on the tequila flavoring. As far as entrees are concerned, they have a pretty wide variety. Some basic Latin dishes as well as a mixture of Caribbean dishes too. I ordered the Chicken Tinga Tostada. Honestly, it lacked flavor. I think the chicken was cooked in lemon juice, but besides that it was very bland. I felt as though it was missing that little extra ummph if you know what I mean. Our waiter, was nice but very quiet. When he spoke he was almost whispering and made it very difficult to hear what he was asking or telling us. I was expecting more as this is a pretty popular spot especially on a Saturday night. Another thing about this waiter was that after dropping off our entrees we could not find him. It was like he disappeared. We were expecting him to come back at least once to check on us but that did not happen. When he did come back, he was passing out checks. Overall, the ambience and drinks are great here. The food is good if you order the right thing, which I did not. But I will definitely be back as I do love to support local foodie icons like Becky. ”
